What are the benefits of gastric band with gastric plication surgery?

Gastric plication with an adjustable gastric band combines two different bariatric techniques in one operation:

  1. Gastric plication:
The surgeon folds the stomach inward along its greater curvature and stitches it securely, without cutting or removing any part of the stomach. This reduces the stomach’s functional volume, meaning the patient feels full after eating much less food.

  2. Adjustable gastric band placement:
On top of the plicated stomach, an adjustable silicone band (like the LAP-BAND®) is placed around the newly narrowed upper portion.

    • The adjustable feature allows the surgeon to tighten or loosen the band by injecting or removing saline through a small port placed under the skin.

    • Tightening the band further controls the food flow from the small pouch into the rest of the stomach, adding another layer of restriction.

In short:
🔹 The plication reduces the stomach size permanently by folding and stitching it.
🔹 The adjustable band fine-tunes how tight the entrance to the stomach is over time, adapting to the patient’s weight loss needs.

Potential benefits:

  • Stronger restriction compared to band or plication alone

  • No removal of any stomach tissue

  • Fully adjustable after surgery

  • Reversible (in theory)

  • Suitable for patient with lower BMI

Is gastric band surgery safe?

Gastric band surgery is a relatively safe and minimally invasive option for weight loss. It involves no cutting of the stomach or intestines, and recovery is usually quick. The adjustable band allows flexible control over weight loss, and it can be removed if necessary. While some patients may need adjustments or further procedures over time, many achieve significant weight loss and improved health with good follow-up and care.

What can I eat after gastric band surgery?

After gastric banding, you can still enjoy a wide variety of foods, but in smaller, more satisfying portions. Right after surgery, you'll start with liquids, then gradually move to soft foods, and then to normal textured meals. With the band’s gentle guidance, you'll learn to eat slowly, chew well, and focus on high-protein, nutritious foods that help you feel full and energized, supporting steady, healthy weight loss.

Will my appetite change after gastric band surgery?

After gastric banding, your appetite often decreases because the small stomach pouch fills quickly, helping you feel satisfied with less food. However, since the stomach itself isn't removed or cut, your ghrelin (the "hunger hormone") levels usually stay the same — but many patients still notice they are much less hungry thanks to the band’s effect on fullness and eating habits.

What about after gastric plication surgery?

According to the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), gastric plication may reduce ghrelin levels by folding and compressing the gastric fundus, where most ghrelin is produced. This hormonal change, combined with the mechanical restriction of the stomach, often leads to decreased appetite and earlier satiety, despite no stomach tissue being resected.

Is gastric band surgery for me?

Gastric band surgery can be a good option if you are looking for a less invasive, adjustable, and reversible way to lose weight. It’s best suited for people who are ready to commit to healthy eating and regular follow-up visits for band adjustments. If you prefer a procedure that doesn’t permanently alter your stomach, and you're motivated to work closely with your surgical team, the gastric band could be the right choice for you.
